Your EV charger questions answered

Swartz Green Electric is here to answer your questions about home EV charger installation. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding home EV charger installations.

What type of EV charger do I need for my home?

Charging in your home will have two options.

Level 1 – This can be plugged into any standard home outlet and will return a charge rate of up to 3 miles per hour.

Level 2 – This is considered a fast charger and charges up to 44 miles per hour.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

Every home is unique, but most typical installations are between $600 and $1,600. An onsite evaluation will include a load analysis of your home to determine if your electrical service can handle the charging demand. If not, we have solutions available to keep the cost down.

Cost varies depending on Service size and desired location of the charger.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for my EV charger?

Yes, a Level 2 Fast Charger Requires at least a 50-Amp 240-Volt dedicated circuit.

What are the charging speeds for home EV chargers?

Home Charging speeds vary depending on the charger that is installed and the battery size in the vehicle. The two most common are Level-1 charging which is capable of 3 miles an hour while Level-2 can reach 44 miles per hour.

Can I install the EV charger myself, or do I need a professional electrician?

Only a licensed and qualified electrician should install most EV charging stations.

Are there any government incentives or rebates for home EV charger installations?

Yes. Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station Rebate – United Cooperative Services (UCS) offers residential customers a rebate of 50% of the cost to install a Level 2 EV charging station, up to $500. Eligible customers must agree to charge EVs during off-peak hours. For more information, including eligibility and how to apply, see the UCS Energy Rebate Programs website.

Is my home’s electrical panel capable of supporting an EV charger?

We perform a thorough Load Analysis of every home that we install a charger in. We then provide a solution for each unique situation.

What is the best location for installing the charger at home?

Typically chargers are installed in the garage where the vehicle is parked. We can install a charger almost anywhere.

Can I use a smart charger with remote monitoring and scheduling features?

Yes. Most chargers today come with this option via WiFi connectivity.

What maintenance is required for home EV chargers?

Your charger should not require any maintenance apart from keeping it free of dust and debris.

How can I ensure that my EV charger is compatible with my electric vehicle?

All electric vehicles come with the same J1772 charger connection except for Tesla which has its own connector. Adapters can be purchased to go from J1772 to Tesla and vice-versa.

Starting sometime in 2024, auto makers will be slowly switching to the Tesla connector.

What safety considerations should I be aware of with home EV charger installations?

Place all charging device components out of reach of children when not in use. Maintain the components of your charging station according to the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines. Signs of excessive wear may indicate a potential shock hazard. Never use an EV charger with obvious signs of damage.

Unlicensed installers often cut corners and use cheap unsafe materials. This has caused fires at the outlet and issues with electrical panels.

How can I estimate the cost of charging my EV at home compared to using gasoline?

To figure out your cost of charging at home, multiply your vehicle’s kWh/100 miles figure by the electricity rate — the cost per kWh — for the time of day you will most often be charging (more about that later). The output will be the cost per 100 miles.

Can I share my home EV charger with friends or family members?

No problem! Community EV charging is easy and convenient for people who do not have access to a driveway to get their own home charger installed. By sharing home chargers with the community, EV drivers can make electric car ownership more accessible for their neighbors.

What should I do if I move or want to relocate my EV charger?
