A breaker that keeps tripping is one of the most common electrical complaints Houston homeowners call us about — and it’s also one of the most important to take seriously. A tripping breaker isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s your electrical system telling you something is wrong.
What Does a Circuit Breaker Actually Do?
Your circuit breaker is a safety device. It monitors the electrical current flowing through each circuit in your home and automatically shuts off (“trips”) when that current exceeds a safe level. This prevents overheated wires, electrical fires, and damage to your appliances.
When a breaker trips once, it’s doing its job. When it trips repeatedly, that’s a sign of an underlying problem that needs to be addressed.
The Most Common Reasons Your Breaker Keeps Tripping
1. Overloaded Circuit
This is the most common cause. An overloaded circuit happens when you’re drawing more electricity than the circuit is designed to handle. In Houston homes, this often happens in kitchens (multiple appliances running at once) or in older homes where the original wiring was designed for far less electrical demand than modern life requires.
Signs of an overloaded circuit: The breaker trips when you run multiple devices at the same time, or when you use a high-draw appliance like a microwave, hair dryer, or space heater.
Solution: Redistribute your devices across multiple circuits, or have an electrician add a dedicated circuit for high-draw appliances.
2. Short Circuit
A short circuit occurs when a “hot” wire (black) makes contact with a neutral wire (white), causing a sudden surge of current. This is more serious than an overload and can be caused by faulty wiring, a damaged outlet, or a defective appliance.
Signs of a short circuit: You may notice a burning smell, scorch marks on the outlet, or the breaker trips immediately when you reset it.
Solution: This requires a licensed electrician to diagnose and repair. Do not keep resetting the breaker.
3. Ground Fault
A ground fault is similar to a short circuit — it happens when a hot wire contacts a grounded surface. Ground faults are especially dangerous in wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and garages, which is why GFCI outlets are required in those locations.
4. Faulty or Aging Breaker
Breakers don’t last forever. In Houston’s heat and humidity, breakers can wear out faster than in other climates. A breaker that trips without an obvious cause — or one that won’t stay reset — may simply be worn out and need to be replaced.
5. Arc Fault
Arc faults happen when damaged or loose wiring creates an unintended electrical arc. This is a leading cause of house fires. Modern electrical codes require arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) in bedrooms and living areas for this reason.
When to Call an Electrician
You should call a licensed electrician immediately if:
- The breaker trips repeatedly even after you’ve reduced the load
- You smell burning near your panel or outlets
- The breaker feels warm or hot to the touch
- You see scorch marks anywhere near your panel or outlets
- The breaker won’t stay reset
Repeatedly resetting a tripping breaker without finding the cause is dangerous. The breaker is protecting you — don’t override it.
Houston-Specific Considerations
Houston’s climate puts extra demands on electrical systems. Air conditioners run for months at a time, drawing significant power. Older homes in the Houston area — especially those built before 1980 — often have panels that were never designed for modern electrical loads. If your home still has an original Zinsco or Federal Pacific panel, tripping breakers may be a sign that your panel needs to be replaced entirely.
