Why Are My Lights Flickering? When It’s Normal — and When It’s Dangerous

Flickering lights are one of those things that Houston homeowners often put up with longer than they should. Sometimes the cause is minor. Other times, it’s a warning sign of a serious electrical problem. Here’s how to tell the difference.

When Flickering Lights Are Probably Nothing to Worry About

A Single Bulb Is Flickering

If only one light is flickering — especially a lamp or fixture with an older bulb — the most likely culprit is a loose bulb or a bulb that’s simply going bad. Try tightening the bulb or replacing it before assuming a wiring problem.

LED Lights Flickering on a Dimmer

Not all LED bulbs are compatible with all dimmer switches. If you recently switched to LED bulbs and lights started flickering when dimmed, the fix is usually either replacing the bulbs with “dimmer-compatible” LEDs or upgrading to a dimmer switch designed for LEDs.

Lights Flicker When a Large Appliance Starts

If your lights dim briefly when your AC kicks on, your refrigerator starts, or your washing machine begins a cycle, this can be normal. Large motors draw a surge of current when starting. A brief, one-time flicker that immediately stabilizes is usually fine.

However, if the flicker is significant, lasts more than a second, or happens every time the appliance runs, that’s worth investigating.

When Flickering Lights Are a Warning Sign

Multiple Lights Flickering Throughout the House

When lights flicker in multiple rooms — especially if it’s not tied to a specific appliance — you may have a problem with your main electrical panel, a loose connection at the service entrance, or an issue with the utility supply. This needs professional evaluation.

Lights Dim Significantly When the AC Turns On

In Houston, we run air conditioners hard for most of the year. If your lights dim noticeably every time the AC starts, your panel may be undersized for your home’s electrical load, or there may be a loose connection on the AC circuit. Neither should be ignored.

Flickering Accompanied by Buzzing or Humming

A buzzing sound from a fixture, outlet, or your electrical panel alongside flickering is a red flag. It can indicate arcing — an uncontrolled electrical discharge that is a primary cause of house fires.

Flickering in One Area of the House

If lights on one side of the house or in one room flicker consistently, there may be a loose connection, overloaded circuit, or failing breaker on that circuit.

The Flickering Gets Worse Over Time

Flickering that gradually becomes more frequent or severe is almost never a problem that resolves itself. It usually indicates a wiring issue that will continue to worsen.

Specific Warning Signs That Require Immediate Attention

Call an electrician right away if flickering is accompanied by:

  • A burning smell anywhere in your home
  • Discolored or warm outlets or switch plates
  • Buzzing or sizzling sounds
  • Breakers tripping at the same time as flickering occurs
  • Lights that flicker even with no load changes in the home

Houston Considerations: Heat and Aging Wiring

Houston’s heat accelerates wear on electrical connections. Thermal expansion and contraction from extreme temperature swings — and the constant cycling of high-load appliances like central AC — can loosen connections over time. Homes built in the 1960s through 1980s in the Houston area may have aluminum branch circuit wiring, which is more susceptible to connection problems and requires special attention.

What an Electrician Will Check

When we investigate flickering lights, we typically check:

  • The specific fixtures and bulbs
  • The circuit connections at the panel
  • The main service entrance and meter connection
  • The load on affected circuits
  • Signs of arcing or heat damage at connections

Don’t Wait on This One

Most flickering light problems are easy and inexpensive to fix when caught early. Left alone, loose connections and overloaded circuits can lead to much more serious — and costly — problems.
