How Much Does It Cost to Install an EV Charger at Home?

Installing a home EV charger is one of the most common electrical projects we complete at Swartz Green Electric — and one of the questions we get most often is: what’s it actually going to cost me? Here’s a straightforward breakdown.

Level 1 vs. Level 2: Which Charger Do You Need?

Before talking cost, it’s worth understanding the two types of home EV charging:

Level 1 (120V): Uses a standard household outlet. No installation required, but charging is slow — typically 3–5 miles of range per hour. Adequate only for plug-in hybrids or drivers with very short daily commutes.

Level 2 (240V): Requires a dedicated 240V circuit (the same type used by electric dryers and ranges). Charges 5–8x faster than Level 1 — typically delivering 20–30 miles of range per hour. This is what most EV owners install at home and what virtually all EV manufacturers recommend.

Almost every homeowner asking about EV charger installation is asking about Level 2. That’s what this guide covers.

Total Cost Breakdown for a Level 2 Home EV Charger in Houston

The Charger Equipment: $300–$900

EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) units vary widely in price. Well-regarded options include:

  • ChargePoint Home Flex — reliable, app-connected, ~$600
  • Emporia Smart Home EV Charger — budget-friendly with energy monitoring, ~$300
  • Tesla Wall Connector — ideal for Tesla owners, works with other EVs, ~$425
  • Enel X JuiceBox — smart charging features, ~$600

As a Qmerit-certified installer, Swartz Green Electric can often source and supply charger equipment as part of the installation package.

Installation Labor: $400–$1,200

This is the most variable part of the cost, and it depends on:

  • Distance from panel to garage: A short run is simple. A long run through finished walls, attic space, or exterior requires more work.
  • Panel capacity: If your panel has room for a 40–60 amp circuit, installation is straightforward. If your panel is at capacity or needs upgrading first, that adds cost.
  • Conduit requirements: Outdoor or exposed runs require conduit, adding material and labor cost.

Permit: $75–$200

EV charger installation requires a permit in Houston and most surrounding municipalities. We handle the permit as part of every installation — it’s not optional, and any electrician who offers to skip it is cutting a corner you don’t want cut.

What’s the Total “All-In” Cost?

For a typical Houston home with a garage close to the electrical panel and adequate panel capacity, expect to pay $800–$1,800 total for a Level 2 EV charger fully installed. More complex installations — longer runs, panel upgrades, conduit through finished space — can reach $2,500–$4,000.

Will I Need a Panel Upgrade?

Possibly. A Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 40–60 amp, 240V circuit. If your electrical panel is older or already near capacity, adding this circuit may require a panel upgrade. We assess this during the initial visit and give you a clear answer before any work begins.

Are There Rebates or Tax Credits Available?

Yes — and they can significantly offset the cost:

  • Federal Tax Credit: The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit covers 30% of EV charger installation costs, up to $1,000 for residential installations.
  • CenterPoint Energy: May offer rebates for qualifying EV charger installations in the Houston service area. Check CenterPoint’s current offers when planning your project.
  • Vehicle manufacturer rebates: Some EV manufacturers offer installation credits as part of vehicle purchase packages.

Why Use a Qmerit-Certified Installer?
